Now That The Comcast-NBC-U Merger Is Official...MEET THE NEW OVERLORDS

$

NBC Comcast Overlords

With the Comcast-NBC-U merger finally approved, this possibly gamechanging fusion of the largest cable/internet provider and a major network will also elevate the careers of quite a few television executive honchos.

While Comcast CEO Brian Robertsis the real winner here, the newly announced corporate team heading NBC contains quite a few of Comcast's leaders, while NBC execs like Mike Pilot, Jeff Gaspin, and Allison Gollust will be out of a job.

So who are these folks that will ostensibly be running the biggest media company in the world?

Steve Burke is Head Honcho

Stephen B. Burke is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Comcast, and was announced as CEO of the new NBC-U back in September. Formerly a Disney employee (he was President of ABC Broadcasting), Burke is responsible for creating the following team of execs who will lead the network.

Bob Greenblatt is king of Primetime

Officially the incoming chairman of NBC Entertainment, Greenblatt will head the most creative side of NBC's programming. He was most recently president of programming at Showtime, and thus responsible for big hits like "Dexter" and "Weeds" coming to fruition. In the past, he also produced favorites like the X-Files and Ally McBeal.

Ted Harbert gets serious (and nationwide)

A former Fox producer, this Comcast chief exec (he runs the entertainment group, which includes channels like "E!") has been named chairman of NBC Broadcasting. A step up from being Chelsea Handler's boss (and more...), Harbert will be heading all of the NBC affiliates and syndication in the country.

Meet Chelsea Handler, The Woman Who Puts The Fear Of God In Jay Leno (And Who Could Take His Show)

chelsea handler

Love her or hate her, Chelsea Handler is already one of the most bankable female entertainers in Hollywood right now.

She's the host of E! late-night success "Chelsea Lately."

She's a New York Times bestselling author (twice-over, now).

She's got a new movie role in the works.

And she's the guiding hand behind a second E! show ("After Lately") and a network pilot that's looking awfully likely to get picked up (a sitcom based on her book "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea").

Handler -- whose signature saucy, unrelenting comedy has hit a lucrative nerve with audiences -- may very well be the first woman to take over a late night network show, now that she's proved herself a consistently sound investment.

And down the line, it may be "The Tonight Show" that wants to buy in. Here's how the TV institution could end up in Handler's grasp:

Jay Leno may have recouped "The Tonight Show" from Conan O'Brien, but his return has felt deflated, and his ratings (though they've recovered from early limping) aren't what they used to be. No matter when he actually leaves, the stage already feels set for his stepping down.

Do we think NBC, still smarting with embarrassment over history's most famous late-night debacle, would take a massive risk and give Handler a "Tonight Show" whirl? No.

But -- especially now that she's getting cozy with Peacock execs via her pilot -- Handler's name will likely be thrown into the programming musical chairs-mix whenever Leno does depart.

If Jimmy Fallon takes over, Handler could move into his "Late Night" spot -- a slot that Fallon has pumped up via his innovative, positive, web-friendly show. (Speaking of "positive," he and the sour-funny Handler could make good foils for each other.)

Or -- if they want to lock down Handler without waiting for Leno to go -- NBC could cancel Carson Daly's low-profile "Last Call" to make room for her.

That move might cost them a little more, since Daly's show costs next to nothing to make -- and Handler would likely require some serious financial motivation to move into the wee hours of the morning.

But she'd have a good long-term reason to take the job, even if it sets her back to 1:30 a.m.

It still puts her in line for the "Tonight Show" throne. (Daly is not in this line, but that's because his music-centric show is a totally different format.)

At that point, all Handler has to do is wait -- for people to change jobs, for female-centric primetime comedy to bolster the push for a late-night lady -- and keep up her winning streak.

In the meantime, if you want to know how well Handler stacks up against Leno, watch her recent appearance on his show -- and judge for yourself who's the sharper comedian.

Leno seems a tad nervous, no? Maybe he'd feel more comfortable if they switched chairs.

Video below.

Here Are 12 Surprising Facts About Late-Night TV Host Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler

Everyone can't stop talking about Chelsea Handler:

In just the last few weeks, Handler has been profiled by Cathy Horyn in The New York Times, featured on the Memorial Day cover of Hamptons Magazine, and landed the latest cover of The Hollywood Reporter.

Even we threw our hat in the ring.

Not to mention, she continues to host her E! late-night talk show "Chelsea Lately" and is currently on a book tour for her latest work, "Lies That Chelsea Handler Taught Me."

Considering her first New York Times bestseller was about past one-night-stands, it's no surprise the candid comedienne doesn't tend to hold back in interviews.

After reading these profiles, we gathered some facts about Handler that may surprise you.

Handler is 'over' talking about celebrity gossip, wants to get serious

On a network whose programming is full of celebrity-fueled news and reality TV, "Chelsea Lately" regularly features a roundtable of comedians that pick apart the latest news, which most of the time is celeb-based as well.

Well, Handler is sick of it.

As she told THR:

"I can't keep doing the same thing; my brain is bleeding. I want to do something that's more mindful and isn't celebrity-centered. I'm not looking to totally bail on E! They've done a lot for me, and I like it here." Beat. "If you take away the Kardashians.

I want to educate people and deliver news that isn't just surrounded by Charlie Sheen. I'd like to be able to do the serious stuff in conjunction with the comedy. I'd like to make an impact and have more responsibility than I do now."

She's dating hotelier André Balazs, not interested in talking about it

While past romantic relationships have provided material for her stand-up and books, she is tight-lipped about her current boyfriend.

Handler told Horyn, “I won’t be doing that with André...I won’t be discussing our personal life — before, during or after our relationship.”

This winter, Chelsea Handler will be starring in "This Means War"

Handler will star alongside Reese Witherspoon, playing Witherspoon's best friend.

Chelsea Handler Explains Why She's The Only Woman Dominating Late-Night

$

Chelsea Handler is a busy gal. She's got her late-night talk show. She's got her books. She's got a show coming up on NBC, and she's got three more shows she'll be spinning off for people on her talk show.

Exhausting, but such is the life of a budding media brand. We caught up with her at the Fortune Powerful Women conference on Tuesday and asked why she's the only woman who gets to spout off in late night.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity," she began. Well that didn't sound like her.

She coughed it up: "I think a point of view is a very powerful thing to have, and not be worried about who's gonna be mad at you for saying what," she said.

And does she plan outrageous things to say on her show? No, she laughed. "That comes pretty easily."

The show based on her book "Are You There Vodka, It's Me Chelsea." will debut mid-season on NBC.  It's a good time to be Chelsea.

Sarah Silverman's NBC Project Is Going To Pilot, Which Is Very Bad News For Whitney Cummings

sarah silverman whitney cummings

The odds that you'll soon see Sarah Silverman on network television are growing and growing.

Back when NBC won a bidding war for the comic's sitcom pitch, we wondered how the Peacock would find room for Chelsea Handler, Whitney Cummings and Silverman.

Now Silverman's project is going to pilot, and it's more likely than ever that Handler or Cummings will face the ax.

Handler's yet-to-air project -- based on her book "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" -- underwent a cast and creative rehaul some months back.

And though Cummings' show, "Whitney," hasn't flat-out tanked, it's received mediocre ratings and worse reviews (plus, it just got shuffled to Wednesday nights).

But it's the new details on the themes of Silverman's show that have us convinced Cummings is the one who will face cancellation.

Deadline Hollywood, which broke the news of Silverman's order, describes the show as a comedy about a  "woman readjusting to the single life after a decade-long live-in relationship."

It's an uncharacteristically mainstream tack for Silverman -- and it's dangerously close to the consistent me-and-my-boyfriend plotlines that comprise "Whitney."

Also working against Cummings: both Handler and Silverman have powerful backers.

Handler just re-upped with E!, which, like NBC, is under the Comcast umbrella; Silverman's show is being shepherded by none other than Imagine co-founder Ron Howard.

Here Are This Year's Winners And Losers In Hollywood

(wire) winners and losers

So long, 2011!

It's been a year filled with small screen shake-ups, celebrity cheating scandals and divorces, and movie re-makes that just won't go away.

And the Kardashians.

MTV scared us. Donald Trump kept yelling. Brett Ratner offended everyone. And Ryan Gosling won you over.

Here's a look at who had a great year...and who didn't.

WINNER: Drake

His sophomore debut, "Take Care" was one of the year's most anticipated and successful albums -- debuting at the top of the Billboard 200, garnering critical praise, and making our own 20 Best Albums of 2011.

He's also been linked to Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, which doesn't hurt.

Plus, you know it's been a good year when a stranger is willing to tattoo your name on her face.

LOSER: "Glee"

The show you used to love is having an identity crisis.

The series steadily lost viewers this year and reached a season ratings low in November.

Why? It's not fun anymore!

We've lost those sillier simple storylines for preachy ones and exciting pop musical numbers for boring classics.

And there's just never enough Jane Lynch.

Luckily, we've not some ideas on how to fix this mess.

WINNER: Zooey Deschanel

The premiere of her show "The New Girl" destroyed its ratings time-slot and won Fox's green-light for a another season after just the second episode.

Despite splitting with her husband two months ago, Deschanel managed the impossible by keeping the news under the tabloid radar.

Oh, and she got to sing the National Anthem at the World Series.

Chelsea Handler Stands By Her Decision To Have An Abortion At Age 16

chelsea-handler-OWN

Funny lady Chelsea Handler turned serious when she opened up about her abortion at age 16 to Rosie O'Donnell this week.

The "Are You There, Chelsea?" star discussed how it was the right decision for her during her teenage years in an interview on "The Rosie Show."

"I was so delusional," Handler told O'Donnell. "I was like, I'm ready for a baby,"

Despite originally being ecstatic about becoming a mom, Handler revealed her parents convinced her the pregnancy might not be the best idea, and ultimately led to her decision to terminate the pregnancy.

"I was trying to argue with them and they were like, 'You're throwing your entire life away,'" Handler said."'You're supposed to create a life for yourself…and we're certainly not going to raise it for you.'"

O'Donnell brought up the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion mentioning how it ruined others' lives; however, Handler, who's now 36, stands by her decision without regrets, admitting she "wouldn't be a good mother."

"You should do whatever you want with your body, and you shouldn't let anyone tell you what to do," Handler said. "It's your decision. I have no regrets at all."

Chelsea Handler's Career Is Crashing And Burning

$
0
0

Chelsea HandlerChelsea Handler's bid for world media domination has hit a few speed bumps lately.

Her NBC sitcom based on her best-selling book "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" is lingering near cancelation ratings. And "This Means War," a romantic comedy featuring Handler as sidekick to Reese Witherspoon, crashed at the box office

These are rare missteps for the host of the popular E! late-night talk show, "Chelsea Lately," who has written three bestsellers in addition to "Are You There, Vodka?" and is the only female host of the MTV Video Music Awards since 1994.

Before her latest stumbles, mass cross-media success seemed imminent for the comic, known for her raunchy, irreverent humor. Now her ability to establish a personality-driven media empire is becoming less certain.

Are-You-There-ChelseaOne thing her NBC sitcom "Are You There, Chelsea?" is missing? Chelsea being Chelsea. Instead of being front and center in a project based on her own bestselling book about her own life, Handler plays second banana to Laura Prepon.

Prepon plays a younger version of Handler, while Handler plays her own sister.

Another thing missing? Viewers. Though the sitcom debuted in January with 6.4 million viewers, it lost 2 million sets of eyes by week two, and has settled in on an average of 4.7 million viewers.

NBC Universal has sometimes used E! as almost a farm team for NBC talent: E! News anchor Ryan Seacrest may join "Today."Joel McHale hosted "The Soup" for five years before "Community" debuted. But Handler still has yet to prove herself ready for the broadcast network -- just as McHale's "Community" has fallen to low, "Are You There, Chelsea?"-ish numbers.

This-Means-War-Chelsea-HandlerAnd while Handler admittedly was only a supporting player in "This Means War," ads keyed on her interaction with Witherspoon in addition to the romantic triangle between Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. The movie has made $42.3 million domestically.

Of course, the NBC show, on which Handler is also an executive producer, is not a total loss yet. "Are You There" has improved NBC's timeslot ratings 14 percent versus last season, and, like many NBC shows, even the lower-rated ones, "Are You There" boasts an upscale viewership.

"Given the competition in the time period and its lead-in, we believe the show is performing solidly," an NBC executive told TheWrap.

The good news: "Chelsea Lately" -- and its spin-off/spoof series "After Lately" -- remains so influential in late-night that VH1 recently hired Jenny McCarthy to host a late-night talk show in an effort to spark its own Handler-esque franchise.

As for Q scores -- those indicators of a celebrity's or TV series' popularity -- "Lately" earned a positive Q score of 25 and a negative Q score is 18.

The average Q scores for all late-night talk shows: 18 positive and 25 negative, meaning "Chelsea Lately" did hit higher in positive and lower in negative than most of her competition.

But "Are You There, Chelsea?" doesn't fare nearly as well on overall Q score stats, earning a dismal 10 percent familiarity.

"Enough said," Q Scores company president Steven Levitt told TheWrap.

Meanwhile, Handler has roles lined up in a pair of upcoming offbeat movie comedies.

She co-stars with Johnny Knoxville in the Josh Schwartz-directed Halloween release "Fun Size," about a teen (Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice) who loses her little brother when she's forced by her mom to take him trick-or-treating. "Colbert Report" writer Max Werner wrote the script.

Handler, who was named one of Glamour magazine's Women of the Year in 2011, will also co-star with Vincent D'Onofrio and Eric Bogosian in the horror-comedy film "Mall," based on Bogosian's 2001 novel of the same name.

However, even they hit, neither movie is unlikely to enhance Handler's brash image or establish her on the big screen.

Chelsea Handler's Hilarious Theory On Taylor Swift's Love Life

Chelsea Handler Bravo Watch What Happens Live

Chelsea Handler appeared on Andy Cohen's late night Bravo talk show "Watch What Happens Live" Wednesday night where she revealed her theory on Taylor Swift's multitide of relationships.

The conversation was prompted when Cohen asked Handler which team she was on in the current Swift vs. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler feud after the singer recently said "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women" in response to a joke the comedic duo made during the Golden Globes.

“I think [Swift's] was a bold statement, but I’m not on anyone’s side because I just don’t care enough,” Handler told Cohen.

“I like that she’s being that vociferous about something that she thinks they were out to get her and they were clearly making a joke just about her demeanor, which is embarrassing. I mean, she’s just dated so many men,” Handler added.

The “Chelsea Lately” host went on to explain, “My theory about Taylor Swift is that she’s a virgin, that everyone breaks up with her because they date her for two weeks and she’s like, ‘I’m not gonna do it.’ And they’re like, ‘Oh, well, forget it. Then I don’t want to date you.’”

Handler continues, “And they think they’re gonna have sex with her… every guy thinks they’re going to devirginize her, and they’re not. She’s never going to get devirginized, ever, ever, ever, ever.”

Reese Witherspoon may be "embarrassed" of her disorderly conduct arrest, but her good friend Chelsea Handler thinks it's "not that big of a deal."

"She's doing fine, she was just trying to protect her husband," Handler told "Entertainment Tonight" at the E! Upfronts on Monday. "Everybody makes mistakes it's not a big deal."

And Handler would know how Witherspoon is doing, as the E! late night host met up with the actress just two days after her arrest.

The pals dined with Witherspoon's husband, Jim Toth, and Cameron Diaz at New York City's Greenwich Hotel following a screening of her new movie, "Mud."

"Nobody was drunk -- it was pretty tame," an Us Weekly source says of the group, who sipped on San Pellegrino instead. "They all seemed really happy. There was no indication that there was anything wrong."

Watch Handler defend her friend below:

Chuy Bravo Chelsea LatelyChuy Bravo is famous for being the 4-foot-tall sidekick to Chelsea Handler on her E! late night talk show, "Chelsea Lately."

Handler often refers to Chuy as her "little nugget," but the dwarf says he doesn't let his small stature change the way he lives -- even at home.

"Despite being the little nugget that I am, I live in a regular-size home," he tells the Wall Street Journal.

But, he does have to make a few changes:

Kitchen:

  • "I have a huge kitchen with a ton of cabinets—which usually is a good selling point—but I can only reach 12 out of 25."
  • "I have a case of water under my sink, and my plates and cups are kept in the lower cabinet next to my stove."

Living Room:

  • "I don't have lowered light switches or anything; in fact, I have to use extenders so I can open and close my blinds."
  • "I have a giant couch—and not just giant to me. It fits about eight regular-size people."

Gym:

  • "I turned my spare bedroom into a little gym. Most of the time it ends up as a parking lot for my scooters while they are charging."

Bedroom:

  • "Some might expect my bed to be on the floor but, you know, my lady friends would not like that. I have a regular-size bed that is way too big for me and a cute little step so I can get up on it."
